Breaking Out of the Big City

Let me introduce myself. I’m Jehan. Born and raised in Thailand and currently living in Toronto. A few months ago, the “Cute Clothes Green Grass” journey began. My best friend, Ronnie, and I were chatting with a friend of ours who described to us the stories of his youth. The days in which he ventured into the wild, encountered nature in its element, braved difficult and daring conditions and somehow incredibly, maintained his faith and sense of serenity throughout all of it.

We were inspired. Ronnie and I decided almost immediately that we needed to experience our own youthful stories and realized that neither of us had truly experienced the treasures of the natural world. I most certainly hadn’t. I had always lived in the heart of large, cosmopolitan and highly industrialized cities and rarely ventured out of them.

Nature terrified me to a certain degree. It seemed unpredictable, because it is. And it felt like I couldn’t have any control of it, which I can’t. And being the relatively (exceedingly) structured person that I am, the realm of nature was entirely out of my comfort zone. But I wanted to be bold, courageous. Truly for the first time in my life, I wanted to set aside my fears and allow my faith to prevail, so Ronnie and I made the abrupt decision to go out to a place called Dundas Peak. Considering that Ronnie and I are both now natives to Toronto, we were stunned that there were places just outside of Toronto in our neighbouring towns where lush greenery and breathtaking waterfalls existed.

We were instantly hooked. I’m not sure how it happens. But perhaps it’s akin to falling in love. They say, ‘when you know, you just know.’ And we knew. We knew that we were in love with the adventure.
